Meet the Donors

Joe Martocchio and Brad Olson

"Lorraine and Robert C. Olson truly were the salt of the earth who wanted the best for everyone.  They believed that people should not go without because of insufficient financial means or challenging personal circumstances beyond their control.  We established these I-Promise scholarships to help provide deserving and hopeful individuals with the education to challenge their minds and to provide them with all of the opportunities afforded by an exemplary Illinois education."

"Because I was helped through scholarships, I feel I should reciprocate for others as this was done for me."

Joseph BohnJOSEPH W. BOHN Memorial FUnd for Illinois Promise

Joe attended the University of Illinois in the 1970s, receiving a BS in Microbiology and MS in Biology in 1980.  He pursued a research and development career in the biotechnology industry, specializing in the experimental development of immunoassay products and the quantitative validation of techniques employed in the manufacture of pharmaceutical products.  While at Abbott Laboratories in 2001, he received recognition and awards for his contributions resulting in improvements to the quality of Abbott’s world-wide drug production enterprise.

Joe was challenged with both mental and physical disabilities throughout his life and career, yet he continually strove to achieve.  Beginning early in his career, he battled the torment and impairment of schizophrenia.  Later in life, suffering from a genetic heart condition, he endured episodes and debilitating accidents that damaged his brain and nearly took his life on two occasions.  Yet, rather than accept disability, he retrained his brain and rehabilitated his body so that he could pursue his work.  In true Illini spirit, he never gave up.  He continued to mentor younger researchers and to make positive contributions to his field to the end.  The Joseph W. Bohn Scholarship Fund is established in memory of Joe’s spirit of determination and courage in the face of adversity.
