The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement is charged with building relationships with our constituents and generating diverse resources that facilitate Illinois’ academic, research, economic and public services excellence. Advancement brings together professionals in marketing, communications, alumni relations and development to lead these efforts across the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Art Director

Charged with leading the creative implementation of the goals of advancement at Illinois, the art director provides vision and guidance to campus communication and design professionals, leads partnerships with internal and external teams on design solutions and executes design projects for the campus advancement office.


  • Develop, implement and refine high quality, innovative concepts that solve strategic findings as well as design and business problems.
  • Anticipate and resolve creative challenges by using appropriate resources.
  • Stay current on design/trends/industry assessing and communicating their potential impact to our team.
  • Collaborate with college and unit-based creative professionals.
  • Provide creative leadership for advancement marketing and communications.


  • 5-7 years of design experience and 2-3 years of art direction experience with an emphasis on brand design and strategy.
  • Experience creating comprehensive marketing materials for an entity.
  • Possesses an understanding of branding strategy and implementation in complex internal and external environments.
  • Ability to develop thematic elements that can be executed across various colleges and units.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization and time management.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and create marketing materials to meet dynamic business goals.
  • Demonstrated success delivering high quality work while insisting on high standards for others throughout campus advancement offices.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite.


  • A bachelor’s degree in art, design or a related field, such as marketing.
  • A master’s degree preferred.

Knowledge Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of higher education administration.
  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to the Association of Fundraising Professionals Donor Bill of Rights which is endorsed by the Office of Institutional Advancement.
